APOEL and Omonoia split the points in a derby that had everything

The oldest rivalry in Cypriot football produced yet another chapter to remember on Sunday night, as APOEL and Omonoia shared the points in a 2-2 draw at the GSP Stadium. More than 21,000 fans packed the stands for the first Nicosia derby of the 2026/27 season, and neither side let the occasion pass quietly.

Omonoia struck first in the 23rd minute through a well-worked corner routine, and doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark when their forward line finally broke through a stubborn APOEL back four. For a spell it looked like the away side might run away with it, but APOEL responded exactly the way their supporters would have wanted: with patience rather than panic.

A penalty on the hour mark, converted calmly down the middle, brought the hosts back into the game, and the equaliser arrived deep into stoppage time after a scrambled finish from close range sent the home end into delirium. Both managers were diplomatic afterwards, praising the intensity rather than dwelling on what their sides might have done differently.

The result leaves both clubs within touching distance of the top of the table heading into the September international break, and sets up an intriguing run of fixtures once domestic football resumes. Cyprus League followers will already be circling the return fixture in the spring.
